Happy Together / Felices Juntos (2015)
Happy Together is a poster project coinciding with the 12th Havana Art Bienal and the recent opening of diplomatic relations between the U.S. and Cuba. Curated by Cuban designer Darwin Fornes and curator Yanela Miranda, and organized in the U.S. by Daniel R. Smith, the project enlisted designers in both North America and Cuba to depict beloved cartoon characters from each other’s culture.
For Cubans, who were raised on American animation, this was a much easier assignment than for U.S. designers who had no knowledge of Cuba’s iconic characters. “With an optimistic tone, Happy Together aims to demonstrate the willingness for dialogue between the two countries,” said Darwin Fornes. A predominately red, white, and blue color palette was chosen since it reflects the national flags of both countries.
